You get me

Nearly 40 years of product innovation, engineering and commercialisation, working directly with you.

Alan Somerfield, founder of Apex Ideas

When you hire Apex, you work directly with me. No account managers, no junior team and no layers between the problem and the person trying to solve it. I bring nearly 40 years of experience in product innovation, engineering, manufacturing and commercialisation, and I work best alongside businesses that already have good people but need an extra level of functional innovation thinking.

I’ve done this from both sides of the table.

Inventor, consultant, engineering director, innovation director and founder.

Two people are sitting at a table discussing, with notebooks and pens in front of them. One person is wearing a dark jacket and the other is wearing a gray sweater.

I’ve spent my career looking at product innovation from every angle. I started by founding and running design consultancy Inventive Step, then moved inside manufacturing businesses as Engineering Director at Interbath, Ideas & Innovation Director at Gripple, and Head of Innovation & Technology at Fenner/Michelin. Today I bring that experience back into Apex. I’ve also brought a product of my own successfully to market with ShowerSpaah.

That means I understand all sides of the table: from creating the idea to dealing with manufacturing and commercial reality needed to get it into production. Along the way, more than 16 patented innovations have made it into the market.

Engineer’s head. Designer’s eye. Commercial brain.

A good idea has to work, be makeable and give someone a reason to buy it.

A split view of an electric kettle and a toaster with internal components visible on a kitchen countertop.

I was trained as BOTH a mechanical engineer and an industrial designer, and that combination has shaped the way I approach products ever since. I’m always looking for the point where the technical solution, the manufacturing reality and the customer benefit line up. A clever idea on its own is not enough. It has to work, it has to be practical to make, and it has to give someone a reason to choose the product.

enough about me

The products and results probably tell the story better.
